What is the SMAS?

Question:
Can you explain what the SMAS is and what it means to tighten them during a facelift?

Answer:
The SMAS stands for sub-muscular aponeurotic layer.  The SMAS is a fibrous layer which lives between the subcutaneous fat and the parotid gland fascia. It is a tough fibrous layer which when elevated will lift the skin. Performing a “skin only” lift will usually lead to poor results with short longevity. This SMAS is elevated as it provides a greater degree of lift and a longer lasting result.
