Question:
I recently heard of a vein treatment that uses radio frequency energy. Is this a good treatment? Can it be used for spider veins on the face?
Answer:
Radio-frequency is the technology used for Thermage. I have never been impressed with the results from this technique. It is usually used to improve the tightness of the skin. To my knowledge it is not used for spider veins on the face. Spider veins on the face are easily improved with a KTP laser which is very reliable and has very little recovery time.

Question:
I am 55 years old and have spider veins on my nose. It is very embarrassing for me because I know that people probably assume I am a drinker when I am not. I would like these veins treated. Is this done by injections? Does each vein have to be injected more than once to get the desired results? Are the results permanent?
Answer:
Usually spider veins on the face are treated with a vascular laser. There are a couple of different lasers which can be used. Either can be as effective as the other, we choose the right laser for the vessels that need to be treated and sometimes use both. The lasers we use are the Vbeam (pulsed dye) and the KTP.

Question:
I am 55 years old and have some spider veins on my face. I saw that sclerotherapy was an option. Is this done in the face? Does each vein have to be injected more than once to get the desired results?
Answer:
Sclerotherapy is not used in the face to my knowledge. Sclerotherapy is usually used on the lower extremities with larger vessels. Spider veins on the face respond very well to vascular lasers. There are a variety of lasers that may be used and a consultation with a physician experienced in this will determine which is the right option for each patient.

Question:
I am a man in my late thirties. Spider veins have begun to appear on my face. Would it be in my best interest to get them removed now before they develop into something more serious?
Answer:
Spider veins do tend to worsen, but do not develop into anything “serious”. The smaller they are the easier they are to remove, however the condition which causes them will still be present and they tend to recur. There are strategies to mitigate the speed of recurrence however. I usually advise patients they should treat the problem when it gets to the point that is bothers them enough to go through the expense, recovery and small risk of the procedure. Spider veins are usually easily treatable with a vascular laser done in the office with topical anesthesia.

Question:
I’m in my late 60s and have numerous spider veins that span the entire left side of my face. I’m very self conscious about how they look and would like to get something done to reduce their appearance. What procedure of yours would best eliminate them?
Answer:
The best treatment for spider veins is a vascular laser. Depending on the size of the vessels and extent we usually use either a KTP laser or a P/D laser. The KTP laser produces less down-time, but the P/D laser works better for diffuse redness.

Question:
Do you use a laser to get rid of spider veins of the face?
Answer:
Yes, usually we will use either a pulsed-dye laser or a KTP laser. Both are vascular wavelengths. The pulsed-dye is more useful for diffuse redness and causes a little bruising. The KTP is better for isolated vessels and does not cause bruising.

Question:
Aside from a facial spider vein treatment, are there any creams or serums that would help eliminate the appearance of spider veins in my cheeks?
Answer:
There are creams that can improve spider veins. Some of them are prescription and others part of skin care lines. Usually though these will only be partially effective and often laser therapy is needed as well. These creams can then be beneficial in maintaining the result.

Question:
I have noticed many spider veins in my face, mostly along my hair line. Could you please describe to me a facial spider vein treatment?
Answer:
Facial spider veins are enlarged capillaries in the skin. Usually we use a vascular laser to treat these areas. There are a few different lasers including IPL/Fotofacial, pulsed dye, and KTP which can be used. The choice of laser depends on the individual patient and is selected following the consult.

Question:
If I get a facial spider vein treatment, will their appearance be completely eliminated?
Answer:
Usually facial spider veins will be diminished with laser therapy, but not completely eliminated depending on how many you have. If you have a few isolated facial veins they may be completely resolved however, the process tends to be ongoing and they are likely to recur over time. If you have very diffuse facial spider veins then it is less likely that they will all resolve, but they can be significantly improved with treatment.

Question:
I just started developing spider veins on my face. Will they go away on their own? Or do I need to get treatment for them?
Answer:
Spider veins can arise from a number of causes. If the cause is something acute then they may resolve on their own. Often however they appear with age as a result of genetics and sun exposure and will not resolve with time. There are however vascular lasers available that will easily improve and often completely remove the veins. We use a KTP laser for this most often, however on some occasions will utilize a pulsed-dye laser for this purpose.
