GFX™ is a revolutionary new treatment utilizing bipolar radiofrequency (RF) technology to selectively target motor nerves, (nerves that initiate muscle action). This treatment ablates the nerve causing unwanted furrows to disappear. Bipolar radiofrequency technology has been used in life-saving heart procedures for over 10 years. This technique is useful for some areas currently treated with injectable botulinum toxin, however it is usually much longer acting and potentially permanent. (Current studies show results as long as a year, but longer follow-up will likely show a lasting effect.) The nerve usually has some minor residual activity allowing for expressiveness, but not enough strength to create a deep furrow.
GFX™ uses a combination of technologies to precisely locate the target nerve and then apply a therapeutic energy. The technique is performed in the office. The skin is disinfected and then markings made to identify the precise areas to be targeted. A small amount of local anesthetic is used to minimize discomfort. (Some patients also elect to have some oral medication to reduce anxiety and discomfort.) A tiny puncture is made in the skin and the GFX™ probe is then inserted. The target area is then located through a process of painless stimulation of the nerve. Once the precise area to be target is located, an exact amount of RF energy is applied, affectively ablating that area of the nerve. This process disrupts that area of the nerve from delivering a stimulus to the muscle responsible for causing unwanted furrows/wrinkles.
Dr. Buckingham feels that successful facial plastic surgery results from the development and maintenance of good rapport between the patient, the surgeon, and his staff during the consultation and future appointments. The consultation will include a complete facial analysis to determine the best procedure to bring about the desired results and all questions relating to the patient’s specific concerns will be addressed.
Prospective patients are encouraged to call the office to schedule an appointment at their earliest convenience.
GFX Frequently Asked Questions
What is GFX?
GFX is a procedure to treat frown lines between the eyes with RF energy.
What is RF energy?
RF is a type of electrical energy that can be specifically controlled and thereby be delivered very accurately. RF energy has been used in medicine extensively, including treatments of the heart, and nerves in the back for pain management. This specific, controlled energy source allows the physician to directly target the nerves to the frowning muscle complex.
What will GFX do for my frown lines?
The GFX procedure will treat the nerves that are responsible for causing muscles to frown. There are 2 major nerves that are treated, one that runs from the outer to middle of the eyebrow and the other that runs along the side of the nose. These nerves will have RF energy applied to them with a pen like probe. The very tip of the probe is used to apply RF energy along the path of the nerve to interrupt nerve function.
How does my doctor know what nerves to treat?
Your physician will take photographs and observe the action of your frown to determine the best way to treat your frown lines. He may also make markings on your skin before the procedure to determine the best treatment approach. He will use the nerve stimulator to track down the nerves as they travel to the frowning muscles and treat them with Radio Frequency energy.
What can I expect the treatment to feel like?
GFX is a 2 part procedure. The first part is the nerve location process. The physician will inject a local anesthetic, much like a dentist uses, to desensitize the areas. He will then insert the probe first, at the outer edges of your eyebrows and second, along side your nose to locate and treat the nerves. During the nerve location process, you may feel a slight tingling. The second part is the nerve treatment phase. Your physician will deliver the RF energy to treat the nerve. This may be mildly to moderately uncomfortable. If you are uncomfortable, report this to the physician.
How long can I expect the GFX procedure to last?
Clinical research has shown that the effects of the procedure may last 12 months or more. Results may vary.
Where will the treatment be performed?
The GFX treatment will be performed in your doctor’s office.
Will I need to have some one drive me home?
Most patients drive themselves home after the GFX procedure. If you require extra medication prior to the procedure, you will need a ride home.
How many treatments will I need to have?
One treatment should last one year or more, and your GFX procedure will be completed on your scheduled treatment day.
Are there any toxins injected during this procedure?
No, GFX is a toxin-free application of RF energy only.
How soon will I be able to return to my normal duties after GFX?
Many patients return to their normal routine immediately after the GFX procedure. However, we recommend taking it easy for the next 24 to 48 hours.
How soon after the procedure can I wash my face and apply lotions and/or makeup?
We suggest washing the area with a gentle soap for a few days after having the procedure and applying mild lotions only for 2 to 3 days afterwards. Also, it is necessary to protect the area from harsh sunlight. Sunscreen should be applied to the face for several months after the procedure.
What will I look and feel like after the procedure?
You may feel numbness from the injection of anesthesia and may have sensitivity to pressure at the treatment sites for several weeks. There is a chance of bruising and/or swelling around eye area from the procedure. Swelling usually resolves in 24 to 48 hours, and bruising can last several days. Typically, the probe insertion site is well healed in 24 to 48 hours.
Do I have to do anything special before or after the GFX procedure?
It is recommended that you not take any blood thinning products for 1 week prior to the GFX procedure. This would include medications like Aspirin, Ibuprophen, Advil, Aleve, etc. Herbal supplements such as Ginkgo Biloba, Vitamin E and Ginseng are best avoided, as well. After the GFX procedure, Tylenol is recommended for any discomfort you may have. It is desirable to sleep with your head elevated for 2 to 3 nights after the procedure.
What should I expect my frown to look like to after GFX?
You can expect to have a relaxed, more natural appearance to the brow. You will retain some mild muscle function. Your brow will not be frozen. Lines and wrinkling in the frown area will improve over time, but deeply ingrained lines may not completely disappear without the use of a filler.
