Frequently Asked Sculptra® Questions

Q - What is Sculptra®?
Sculptra® is an FDA-approved injectable filler comprised of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic material which is biocompatible, biodegradable and helps to restore lost collagen. It may be used to restore facial volume loss. Sculptra® can restore a smoother, more youthful appearance to the face by restoring lost collagen and volume.

Q - What is Sculptra® made of?
Sculptra® is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic material which is both biocompatible and biodegradable. PLLA works by restoring lost volume and collagen in the skin. PLLA does not require skin testing prior to treatment.

Q - Who is the best candidate for Sculptra® treatments?
Candidates for Sculptra® treatment are in good physical health and have realistic expectations for improving areas of facial fat loss. The best way to determine if Sculptra® is right for you is to meet with Dr. Buckingham for a private patient consultation.

Q - Where is the Sculptra® treatment performed?
Dr. Buckingham performs Sculptra® treatments in the office setting.

Q - Is anesthesia used during the Sculptra® treatment?
The Sculptra® injection may be performed with a local or topical anesthetic to optimize the patients comfort during treatment.

Q - How is the Sculptra® treatment performed?
Sculptra® treatments are simple, quick, in-office treatments. Dr. Buckingham uses a very fine needle to gently inject the Sculptra® beneath the skin. Most patients require an average of three treatments spaced over several months.

Q - How long does a Sculptra® treatment take to perform?
Sculptra® is a quick procedure which can take as little as fifteen minutes up to forty minutes to complete depending on the size and number of treatment areas.

Q - Is the Sculptra® injection painful?
Patients generally report little discomfort with the Sculptra® injection. However, a local or topical anesthetic may be used to ensure your comfort during treatment.

Q - What is the recovery like after Sculptra® treatment?
There is little downtime associated with Sculptra® treatment and the recovery is generally quick and minor. Some swelling, redness or bruising may occur but these side effects are generally minimal and fade within a few hours to a few days. Patients are able to return to their normal routine immediately after treatment. Bruising may be concealed with makeup. Results will become visible over a period of time as new collagen regenerates. Results are generally seen starting six weeks after treatment and continue over the next six months.

Q - Will I need to take time off from work after undergoing Sculptra® treatment?
Work and other normal activities can be resumed immediately after treatment with Sculptra®.

Q - How long do the results of Sculptra® last?
The results of Sculptra® can 2 years or longer. Most patients require an average of three treatment sessions spaced over several months. Results are gradual as new collagen regenerates.
