Frequently Asked Midface Lift Questions

Q - What is a midface lift?
The midface lift, also referred to as endoscopic midfacial surgery or a cheeklift, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to restore a sagging cheek. The midface lift improves the appearance of drooping in the temple and cheek area which, in turn, improves dark circles and puffiness under the eyes.
Q - Who is the best candidate for a midface lift?
Candidates for the midface lift are in good physical health and have realistic expectations for improving the appearance of a sagging cheek and midfacial area. For patients with sagging in the forehead or eye area, a forehead lift or eyelid lift may be a better option. A private patient consultation with Dr. Buckingham is the best way to determine if the midface lift is right for you.
Q - What can I expect during a consultation for a midface lift?
During your consultation for a midface lift, Dr. Buckingham will perform a complete facial analysis which will help to determine the best procedure to meet your desired results. The doctor will also be sure to answer any and all questions that you may have.
Q - Where is the midface lift procedure performed?
Dr. Buckingham performs the midface lift on an outpatient basis in an outpatient facility.
Q - What type of anesthesia is used for the midface lift?
The midface lift is often performed with local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia.
Q - How is the actual midface lift procedure performed?
For the midface lift, Dr. Buckingham makes the same incisions made for the brow lift. This includes a few small incisions which are placed in a well-concealed location within the hair-bearing scalp. Working through the incisions, Dr. Buckingham then uses minimally invasive techniques to lift the sagging cheek tissue to a more youthful position.
Q - How long does the actual midface lift procedure take to perform?
The surgical time for a midface lift generally takes between one and two hours.
Q - Where are the incisions made for midface lift?
The incisions for the midface lift are small and are located within the hair-bearing scalp.
Q - Are there scars after a midface lift?
The incisions made for the midface lift, and their resulting scars, are typically hidden or well concealed as they are placed within the hair-bearing scalp. As with all of his surgeries, Dr. Buckingham uses the smallest incisions necessary to perform the midface lift.
Q - Is the midface lift procedure painful?
There is little to no discomfort during the midface lift surgery due to the anesthesia that is used. After the procedure, patients typically experience minimal discomfort when relieved though the use of prescribed medication.
Q - What is the recovery like after the midface lift?
The recovery after a midface lift generally lasts between seven and ten days. Swelling and bruising may occur but will fade within one to two weeks. Some itching of the incisions, as well as possible numbness, may occur as you heal.
Q - How much time will I need to take off from work after my midface lift surgery?
Recovery after the midface lift is relatively short, lasting between seven to ten days, and patients are typically able to return to work after this time and sometimes beforehand.
Q - How soon after my midface lift surgery can I exercise?
Light walking-type exercise can typically be resumed within one week after undergoing the midface lift, though more strenuous activities may need to be postponed for about two to three weeks as these may increase swelling, prolong healing, and risk bleeding.
Q - When are the stitches removed after the midface lift procedure?
Any surface sutures/staples used are typically removed within seven to ten days after the midface lift procedure.
