Facial Fat Transfer

Texas Fat Transfer

Facial aging is composed of three elements: sagging of soft tissues due to gravity, wrinkling of the skin due to sun exposure and loss of elasticity and importantly loss of volume in the face. The loss of volume accentuates the aging process by giving the face a hollow, haggard look. The youthful face is characterized by bright eyes with a soft transition between the lower eyelid and the full heart-shaped cheek region. The aged face appears drawn or hollow, especially under the eyes. The aged lower eyelid looks long and there is a sharp line of demarcation between the lower eyelid and cheek referred to as a tear trough.

Facial fat transfer is an exciting minimally invasive rejuvenation procedure which allows us to sculpt and restore the face to its natural youthful beauty.

The procedure can be used alone or in combination with other procedures such as a Facelift in Austin or blepharoplasty. During a facial fat transfer, fat is first harvested from a fattier area of the body, such as the abdomen or hips through a gentle suctioning technique. Using a small cannula (hollow blunt tube the size of the end of a pen) the fat is then transferred into the face. There are no facial incisions however some post-operative bruising and swelling can be expected. The fat does not move or shift as it becomes incorporated as living tissue; results are extremely long lasting, if not permanent. This outpatient procedure is usually performed under light IV sedation and requires no post-operative dressing or drains. Facial fat transfer is not used for filling in facial lines and wrinkles however other injectable fillers may be preferable for that situation.

To determine if a patient is a good candidate for this procedure, Dr. Buckingham recommends a private patient consultation.

Frequently Asked Fat Transfer Questions

Q – What is facial fat transfer?
Facial fat transfer, also referred to as fat injection, is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that counters facial aging, specifically the sagging of soft tissues and the wrinkling of skin. Fat is collected from a fattier body part like the hip or abdomen through a gentle suctioning method and then transferred into parts of the face. Without making any incisions, it serves to temporarily sculpt the aged parts of the face to add volume and conceal wrinkles and lines, giving the patient a more youthful appearance.

Q – Who is the best candidate for facial fat transfer?
Candidates for facial fat transfer are in good physical health and have realistic expectations for improving an aged facial appearance. A private patient consultation with Dr. Buckingham is the best way to determine if facial fat transfer is right for you.

Q – Are there any limitations to what facial fat transfer can achieve?
