Otoplasty Instructions

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING LIST OF INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY TO MINIMIZE ANY ADVERSE SURGICAL OUTCOMES.  IF YOU SHOULD HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK US.

Before your surgery:

Please follow all the preoperative instructions outlined in the Preoperative Instruction Sheet carefully.  Avoid any aspirin-containing or aspirin-related products as well as herbal medications and nutritional supplements as outlined in the Preoperative Instruction Sheet.

Items needed for post-operative care: Polysporin Ointment, Hydrogen Peroxide, Q-tips, a light elastic headband

After your surgery:

  1. Please follow the Postoperative Instruction Sheet carefully.

  2. The day after surgery, the dressing placed around your head will be removed and a new dressing will be applied. You should keep this in place for an additional 48 hours and remove as we instruct you to do so.

  3. A dissolvable type of suture has been placed behind the ears. This area will need to be cleaned two to three times per day with Q-Tips and Hydrogen Peroxide. After cleansing with Hydrogen Peroxide, the antibiotic ointment should be applied with a Q-Tip for the first week.

  4. For the first three days following surgery, the face may be washed with warm
water and gentle soap. After the dressing has been removed, the hair may be gently shampooed, as long as you are careful in and around the ears. It is advisable to reapply the antibiotic ointment after you have shampooed your hair each time for the first one week.

  5. The light elastic headband should be worn post-operatively after the dressing has been removed, for 6 weeks in the evening hours and at night. This is a preventative measure so the ears are not disturbed or traumatized while sleeping. It also aids in assisting the healing process to occur where the ears are positioned.

  6. Finally, it is very important to your well being that you follow completely all of the  instructions given to you by this office. We will check your progress regularly following surgery.      7.

  7. DON’T TAKE ANY CHANCES!  If you are concerned about anything you consider significant, please call me at 512-401-2500 or 866-451-2500.
