So one of the common questions we get asked is, "What is a Plastic Surgeon?"

I think in order to answer that question, you have to define what are the other specialties in cosmetic surgery and those are: dermatologic cosmetic surgeons or dermatologist who do some cosmetic procedures, general plastic surgeons who do cosmetic surgery of the face, body and hand, and ocular plastic surgeons who are plastic surgeons specialized in surgery of the eyelids.

So a facial plastic surgeon is an individual who usually has completed a five year residency in otolaryngology - or commonly known as ear, nose and throat surgery - following four years of medical school where they obtain a medical degree. You can also become a facial plastic surgeon by doing a general plastic surgery residency followed by a facial plastic surgery fellowship, but more commonly people who focus in facial plastic surgery have done the otolaryngology residency.

That residency focuses on all of the intricate anatomy of the face and neck; and during that residency we do complex reconstructive procedures related to kids who are in trauma of the head and neck. So by the time you've completed that five focused years of head and neck surgery, you're really an expert in the anatomy of the face and neck. Then following that five year residency, I completed a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery where I continued to focus my skills on cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face and neck.

Following that fellowship, I became board certified in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and I'm also board certified in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery; so I carry two board certifications related to surgery of the face and neck. So really, a facial plastic surgeon is someone who's spent all of their training learning all of the intricate anatomy of the face and neck, as well as specialized training related to cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face and neck and has sat through a rigorous set of examinations to become board certified in that process.
