In Your 50s? 5 Great Treatments to Help You Glow

Looking at some celebrities, you’d never guess that they’re in their 50s. Some people just seem to have this timeless glow about them. They seem exempt from sagging and wrinkling. The truth is, no one is exempt. Aging affects us all. So how do celebrities maintain that youthful glow? They take steps to care for their skin before it starts showing signs of age. While that often means a rigorous at-home regimen, it can also include cosmetic treatments and plastic surgery.

If you’re in your 50s, you can still reclaim some of your youthful glow. How? With surgery or non-invasive treatments. The same procedures celebrities count on to maintain their beautiful skin are available to almost everyone. Here are 5 great treatments to help you glow and feel better than ever.

  1. Fat Transfer

One of the major causes of facial aging is volume loss. In youth, our faces are supported by collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, and facial fat. As we age, these important components begin to disappear, and new production slows down. This causes wrinkling, sagging, and a hollow appearance. Facial volume loss can even affect the resting facial expression!

A fat transfer can be the answer to facial volume loss. The procedure involves first taking fat from one area of the body (such as the hips or stomach). The fat is then purified and processed before it is injected into the face to restore volume and youthful contours. It may seem like a cruel twist that we start having problems keeping off body fat as we lose facial volume, but this is actually important for the fat transfer procedure. Without unwanted fat deposits in other areas of the body, there is no way to achieve facial rejuvenation naturally.

Fat transfer has many benefits. It’s minimally invasive, requiring only tiny incisions. It’s totally natural, and there is no risk of rejection. Most of the fat that is transferred to the face will establish itself and survive long term, leading to long-lasting results. Although it isn’t the focus of the procedure, many patients love that fat transfer reduces fat in “problem areas” of localized bulk.

  1. Blepharoplasty

If you want to regain your youthful glow without a major surgery like a facelift, a procedure like blepharoplasty may be the answer. Blepharoplasty is a term for cosmetic eyelid surgery, and it is very popular for rejuvenating the eye area. People with undereye bags, drooping upper lids, or a perpetual tired expression can all benefit from this minor surgery.

Incisions for blepharoplasty are usually hidden in the creases of the eyelid, so no scarring should be visible after the procedure. The surgeon then reshapes and removes skin and fat to improve the contours of the area. The result is a rejuvenated and refreshed eye area that makes the patient look more alert, awake, and youthful. Most patients only have to take about a week off from normal activity, and the final results will be apparent within a month.

  1. Skin Resurfacing

Because our skin takes a beating on a regular basis, it’s common for brown spots, fine lines, and other imperfections to develop over time. Fortunately, there are several very effective treatments for resurfacing and rejuvenating the skin. The two most popular are laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels. These treatments work by triggering the body’s natural healing processes, allowing it to create bright new skin and a more youthful glow.

Today, laser skin resurfacing treatments are extremely popular. These procedures have become much safer and gentler since they were first introduced. Today, options like Whisper-3G Erbium laser treatments can be performed in just 30 minutes, using only topical anesthetic. This approach allows patients to get back to their everyday activities quickly.

Chemical peels involve the use of chemicals to exfoliate the skin. Applying different chemicals to the skin can treat a wide range of problems, from pigmentation irregularities to wrinkles and dull skin. Light chemical peels exfoliate and refresh the skin. Deep peels have greater anti-aging power, but involve more downtime.

  1. Limited Incision Facelift

While many people are nervous about the idea of a facelift, there are some great options that are less invasive than the traditional surgery. A limited incision facelift (sometimes known as a mini lift) addresses the lower face, lifting and tightening the tissues for a more youthful appearance. Although the procedure is surgical, downtime is minimal compared to other facelift techniques. Patients can often return to social activities within a few days. The results look extremely natural, but noticeable.

  1. Botox or Dermal Fillers

One of the most popular treatments for patients dealing with signs of aging are Botox and dermal fillers. These injectable treatments offer the benefits of fast results, few side effects, and no downtime. Erasing wrinkles in just 15-30 minutes, there are a wide range of injectable treatments available. Patients can customize these temporary treatments to suit their individual needs.

Botox and dermal fillers offer two different benefits: Botox reduces muscle activity, relaxing wrinkles for 3-4 months. This treatment takes about a week to start working. Fillers replace lost volume and hyaluronic acid, filling in skin folds and fine lines. The results are immediate, and last about 6-12 months on average.

Are You a Candidate?

Everyone’s aging process is different. You will need to discuss your rejuvenation goals with a qualified plastic surgeon in order to make an informed decision. Since each person ages at a different rate and in different ways, each treatment should be customized. Your surgeon may recommend a combination of treatments, depending on your preferences, overall health, and signs of aging.
