I am scheduled for rhinoplasty and now I realize that I didn’t get all of my questions answered. What type of anesthesia is used? When is a closed vs. open approach appropriate? How long is the surgical time.?
In our practice we use general anesthesia for rhinoplasties. Most of our other facial procedures are performed under IV sedation, but we found that a significant number of patients having rhinoplasty will move or cough during a rhinoplasty and this problem is eliminated by using general.
We utilize a closed approach in certain patients with a symmetric nose and a hump who do not require significant tip narrowing or speader grafts. In our practice this is about 10% of the time. We feel that better results are obtained in most cases using an open approach. The surgical time depends on what needst to be performed, but varies from 90 min to about 3 hours.
