I’ve lived in California all of my life, and now that I’m in my 50’s my skin is showing signs of sun damage. Is a chemical peel my best option for lessening these effects?
There are many contributing factors to aging skin when you have reached 50. We believe that gravity, volume loss and actual skin changes all contribute to facial aging. When a patient speaks of “sun damage”, they are usually referring to wrinkles, loss of tone, pigmentation changes and sometimes actual rough spots. These are the type of changes that a skin resurfacing technique such as a chemical peel can assist with. Both lasers and chemical peels can be used to resurface the skin and either can be equally effective. Lasers differ in their power and density (percentage area resurfaced); the higher the power or density the better the results, but also the longer the recovery time. Chemical peels can also vary in strength and just like laser can provide subtle or dramatic results with varying recovery times.
