Question:
My daughter is eight years old. The other day she came home in tears because the kids at camp were teasing her about her ears. They are large and they stick out from her head. Can you tell me how otoplasty can fix them and what the scarring will be like afterward?
Answer:
An otoplasty fixes prominent ears by making an incision behind the ear and using sutures to mold the cartilage of the ear into a more pleasing position. The procedure in an 8 year old is performed under anesthesia at our surgery center. It takes about 2 hours to perform and about a week to heal. The scarring is essentially imperceptible as the incisions are completely behind the ear.
