Aging is inevitable. This can be a more challenging process for some to accept than others. Often the first signs of aging are evident in the face, where you may see small imperfections like lines and wrinkles emerge. This can be followed by volume loss, particularly around the cheeks and eyes. Next, the skin texture may change and that once taut, smooth appearance of the skin diminishes.
If you’re self-conscious about the aging changes in your face, you’re not alone. While we cannot escape the aging process, with a little cosmetic intervention we can regain that youthful and vibrate appearance that we all so desire, and we can do so without surgery.
Enter the Injectable
Gone are the days when your only options for cosmetic surgery were surgery. Surgical techniques are often invasive, costly, and require a lengthy recovery process. Injectables, on the other hand, offer a great non-invasive alternative to rejuvenate your appearance and help you look your best. There are a vast array of injectables currently on the market. Choosing the one that’s right for you can be confusing. Dr. Buckingham will work with you to select the best injectable to help meet your aesthetic goals.
Some injectables treat wrinkles by relaxing the muscles in the face to help create a smooth and natural look. Botox is, perhaps, the most well-known example of this. Botox is often referred to as a neurotoxin and it works on dynamic wrinkles, or those which occur as a result of facial expressions. By relaxing the underlying muscle responsible for the facial expression, like frowning or smiling for example, the resultant crease is no longer made. Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are those which are still present when the face is at rest, and these are best treated with a dermal filler like Juvederm. Dermal fillers can also be used to restore volume in areas of the face that are sunken and appear tired.
Each of these options can dramatically change the facial appearance with a simple injection, and each has their own benefits. Both forms of injectables are temporary and will need to be repeated every few months or so in order to maintain the results. Injectables are a great anti-aging tool that can help you when non-invasive and non-surgical techniques are desired.
Botox is a very versatile injectable that can greatly enhance the appearance of the face by eliminating dynamic lines and wrinkles that may make you look older, tired, angry or unhappy. Botox is injected into specific areas in the face where the problem areas occur. This is a great injectable for smoothing the eyebrow area, and eliminating other areas where overactive muscle activity has resulted in unattractive lines, including crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead wrinkles. Botox is also a great alternative to a browlift as it can help to lift the eyebrows.
The formula in Botox is able to relax and calm the overactive muscles in the areas where it is injected, thus eliminating the associated skin crease. The procedure can be completed in about fifteen minutes during a simple office visit. The injection is well tolerated and involves little discomfort and minimal side effects. It is not a permanent solution and the injection must be repeated every few months in order to maintain the results. Botox can be used in combination with other dermal fillers that can assist in filling in hollowness and creases. Although Botox will need to be repeated, it is a safe way to relax the muscles in the face and restore a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Juvederm is currently one of the most popular dermal fillers available. It is FDA approved for cosmetic purposes on all skin tones. This injectable became FDA approved in 2006, and is utilized in the facial area to make deep folds appear softer and to reduce wrinkles. It can eliminate nasolabial folds that appear around mouth, fill small scars, and plump the lips. Juvederm is a clear gel filler made of hyaluronic acid that is injected into various areas of the face. It comes in several different formulas. Like Botox, the results of Juvederm are not permanent but the treatment can be repeated as needed to maintain results. Generally, Juvederm lasts six to nine months or longer. Restylane is another dermal filler comprised of hyaluronic acid that works similar to Juvederm and can produce excellent results.
