What is a fractional laser?
A fractional laser is a laser that leaves small islands of untreated skin in-between larger islands of treated skin. The reason for doing this is that the small remaining islands can then bud and restore the epithelium to the surrounding treated areas. In the case of fully ablative laser or chemical peels the new skin must bud from the depth of the hair follicles and oil glands, which in most instances requires more time than in the fractional cases.
