Aging is inevitable. As the years pass, the effects of time, gravity, sun exposure and other factors take their toll on the body. Often, the most significant changes are first seen on the face, where sagging, wrinkles and volume loss may all occur. Fortunately, there are ways to combat the signs of aging, from non-surgical treatments like injectables and skin resurfacing, to surgical procedures like facelifts and eyelids lifts. One of the more popular solutions which has been increasing in popularity in recent years is facial fat transfer.
What is Facial Fat Transfer?
Facial fat transfer is a minimally invasive procedure that allows you to sculpt your face and restore lost volume to create a more youthful, glowing appearance. Facial fat transfer can be performed as a single treatment or it can be paired with other cosmetic surgery procedures such as facelifts, rhinoplasty, and blepharoplasty. When combined with other procedures, fat transfer can compliment the other treatment and improve the overall appearance of the face.
During the procedure, fat is harvested from an area on the body where there is excess, such as the hips or abdomen. This is achieved with gentle liposuction techniques using a small cannula or tube that is about the size of a pen tip. The harvested fat is prepared and then transferred into the treatment area. There are no extensive incisions made on the face and the recovery is fairly mild, though some bruising and swelling may occur.
Is This a Permanent Solution?
Whether fat transfer is permanent or not is often a much debated question. After the procedure, some amount of the transferred fat may be reabsorbed by the body. However, what then remains is typically considered permanent. To address this, many plastic surgeons will overfill the treatment area. This can result in a puffy appearance immediately after treatment, but this is temporary and the final results will appear in time.
While fat transfer is great for restoring lost volume and creating a fuller, more youthful appearance, it is not always the best treatment for some facial lines and wrinkles. If you are interested in filling in certain fine lines and wrinkles on your face that cannot be targeted with fat transfer, you can talk to Dr. Buckingham about the different facial fillers and injectable treatments that he has to offer.
Is There A Lot of Downtime After This Procedure?
Facial fat transfer is an outpatient procedure that is performed in a sterile surgical operation room. The procedure will be performed under light intravenous sedation. Generally, there is no need for postoperative drains and/or dressings. Aside from being a little sore, swollen and bruised after the procedure, there is no major downtime and patients generally find they can return to their normal routine within a few days.
How Do I Know If This Procedure Is Right For Me?
If you are unhappy with your facial appearance and how it has aged due to lost volume, facial fat transfer may be a great choice for you. The best way to determine if this or another procedure can help you meet your goals is to set up a private consultation with Dr. Buckingham. During the consultation appointment, Dr. Buckingham will talk to you about your medical history, listen to your concerns and examine your face, and then recommend an appropriate treatment course.
