Question:
I am an African American with a darker skin tone. I have uneven pigmentation around my face and neck and would like to know if a TCA peel would work as well on me as it would for a lighter skinned person.
Answer:
Individuals with darker skin types cannot undergo the level of peel that patients with lighter skin can. Anytime inflammation is induced in the skin whether it be through chemicals or laser there is a risk of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Darker skin types are significantly at risk for this complication. A very gentle approach needs to be taken with dark skin types.
